H1N1 Situation Report
Report Period: December 31, 2009 to January 7, 2010
The Connecticut Departments of Public Health (DPH) reports that the latest epidemiology indicates that the second wave of the H1N1 virus is drawing to a close. Also, sufficient vaccine exists within the state for the present need. Therefore, this will be the last report issued by DEMHS at this time. The Governor’s Office, DPH and DEMHS will continue to monitor the situation and will re-activate these reports if circumstances warrant.
NOTE: According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the start of the 2009-10 influenza season began Sunday August 30, 2009. All statistics provided are based on this calendar.
I. CONNECTICUT SITUATION SUMMARY
Department of Public Health (DPH)
CT Epidemiology/Infectious Disease Section Update:
· Preliminary influenza data reviewed from the week ending January 2, 2010 reveals an overall trend of decreasing influenza activity is still being observed in Connecticut, as measured by laboratory confirmed test results and most syndromic surveillance system activity.
· This decrease resulted in a change of our national flu activity classification from “regional” to “local” level for this.
· The 2009 influenza A (H1N1) virus remains the predominate subtype circulating within Connecticut, although an additional number of seasonal influenza type B isolates are being identified.

Deaths by county: Fairfield 2, Hartford 9, Litchfield 1, Middlesex 2, New Haven 3, New London 1, Tolland 1, Windham 1, TOTAL: 20
Vaccine distribution update: Connecticut has received 1,124,500 doses of the H1N1 vaccine.
Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS)
· Current DEMHS activation level — MONITORING (information review and sharing, and outreach mode). H1N1 incident information has been posted for state and local public safety officials on Web EOC.
Public Information
The DPH H1N1 Hotline is open between the hours of 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Total number of calls into the DPH Hotline since inception (Oct 5th): 9,399
· 211 Infoline: 108 calls were received by 211 during the week of Dec. 27, 2009 to Jan. 2, 2010.
· Current public messaging:
- Vaccine is now available for all people of Connecticut who would like to be vaccinated.
- While we continue to see a decline in H1N1 cases, we expect to see cases of H1N1 over the next few weeks.
- Vaccination is the single, most effective way to protect yourself from the flu and we encourage people to get vaccinated
II. NEW ENGLAND STATES/FEMA REGION A (including NY&NJ) H1N1 UPDATE SUMMARY
· More than 2 million doses of H1N1 vaccine have now been received in MA. State health officials have asked their local public health partners to begin holding large-scale public flu clinics after the New Year, which will be open to all residents regardless of whether or not they are in a priority group.
III. NATIONAL H1N1 SITUATION UPDATE SUMMARY
CDC Update – 31 Dec 2009
· Overall flu activity decreased slightly in the United States during the week of December 20-26, 2009, as reported in FluView. The number of states reporting widespread flu activity decreased from 7 to 4. the four states are reporting widespread influenza activity are: Delaware, Maine, New Jersey and Virginia.
· Almost all of the influenza viruses identified so far continue to be 2009 H1N1 influenza A viruses. These viruses remain similar to the virus chosen for the 2009 H1N1 vaccine, and remain susceptible to the antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir with rare exception.
