Recreation Commission

MISSION

The purpose of the Recreation Commission to promote the general welfare of the community by providing recreational activities for children and other citizens of the Town of Woodstock.

MEETING SCHEDULE

The full Recreation Commission meets monthly, usually on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Special Subcommittee meetings are scheduled as needed. Agendas and minutes are available at the Town Hall and on this website. Meetings are open to the public.

MEMBERSHIP

The Recreation Commission is a five member group created by the Board of Selectmen. The terms of office are two years running concurrently with the Board of Selectmen each municipal election.

We need volunteers. Do you have great ideas? Would you like to see new programs? Do you have a little time? If you would like more information on how to get involved with this fun and dedicated commission, call us at 860-928-6595 ext. 332.

RECREATION NEWS

Woodstock Fuel Assistance Donations: The Woodstock Recreation Commission is pleased to announce that we were able to donate $1,000 from the Memorial Day 10K Road Race proceeds to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund. We donated an additional $700 to the Woodstock Fuel Assistance Fund from the proceeds of our 6th Annual Town Wide Tag Sale. Thank you to our sponsors for those two events, and to everyone who participated. 

New Recreation Park Facility: Located on Senexet Village Road (Behind the Beeches Real Estate off Route 171): Soccer field, walking trail, and basketball court. For more information contact the Recreation Department.

2019 RECREATION PROGRAMS  

 

Yoga Summer Session will be held at the Woodstock Town Hall, lower level room 1. Classes will take place on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm on the following dates: May 20, June 3, 10, 17, 24, July 1, 8, 15. Class will be held at the WMS Music Room on June 3. The cost is $64 for 8 classes, $35 for 4 classes, or a drop in rate of $10 per class. Click here for the Summer Yoga registration form. 

Yoga Summer Session 2 will be held at the Woodstock Town Hall, lower level room 1. Classes will take place on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 pm on the following dates: July 29, August 5, 12, 19, 26, September 9, 16, 23. Class will be held at the WMS Music Room on September 9. The cost is $64 for 8 classes, $35 for 4 classes, or a drop in rate of $10 per class. Click here for the Summer 2 Yoga registration form. 

Volleyball Summer Camps: Join us for 1, 2, or 3 sessions of our General Skills Volleyball camps. These camps are a great opportunity to learn and develop the proper fundamentals of the game from beginner to varsity level. Courts will be broken down by ability level and coached by high school coaches and collegiate players. Camps will take place in the Woodstock Academy Gymnasium (North Campus). Dates are 7/22-25; 7/29-8/1; 8/ 5-8 Cost: $95 or $170/two; $210/three. Family Discounts available. Open to Girls and Boys entering grades 4-12 When: 5:30 pm-8:30 pm. Click here to download a registration form. 

Preseason Skills Volleyball Camp: This camp is a great opportunity to practice skills and scrimmage to get ready for the upcoming volleyball season. Camp will take place in the Woodstock Academy Gymnasium (North Campus) August 19, 20, 21. Cost: $75. Family Discounts available. Open to students entering grades 9-12 When: 5:30 pm-8:30 pm. Click here to download a registration form. 

Tennis Clinics: Tennis clinics run by the Woodstock Academy Boys & Girls Head Coach and her staff of current players. Clinics run from 9-11am and are $65 per person per week. Dates are as follows: Session 1 July 8-11 rain date July 12. Session 2 July 15-18 rain date July 19. Session 3 July 22-25 rain date July 26. Session 4 August 12-15 rain date August 16. Basketball Camp: General Skills Basketball Camp. This camp is a great opportunity to learn and develop the proper fundamentals of the game from beginner to varsity level. Individual and team concepts will be covered. Dates are July 29-August 2. Session 1 is from 5:30 to 7 pm and is open to boys and girls entering grades 5 and 6. Session 2 is from 7:15-9 pm and is open to boys and girls entering grades 7 and 8. Cost is $80. Family discounts are available, please call for details. Click here to download a registration form.

 Twilight Concert Series

June 7: Woodstock Academy Jazz Band, Stattic, & Woodstock Rail Line. The Woodstock Academy Jazz Band will start the night off playing a mix of old and new jazz music that will leave your toes tapping and your soul swinging, Stattic a small jazz ensemble will perform next. Finish the night with Woodstock Rail Line, a local favorite that explores today's Americana/Roots music with a blend of rock and ballads.

July 12: Strange Alliance. Specializing in rock covers from across the decades, with 3 and 4 part vocal harmonies, this band is sure to get you up and moving with their classic dance rock from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. From Classic Rock to R&B to Alternative and Blues, there is something for everyone. (Rain date August 16)

August 9: Al Fenton Big Band. The Al Fenton Big Band is a renowned ensemble of 20 accomplished and dedicated jazz musicians. Thrilling audiences throughout Connecticut, the band prides itself on its technical abilities, energy, and musical versatility. Their mixed repertoire combines music from the golden era of swing to modern big-band arrangements of contemporary tunes. (Rain date Thursday August 22).

All concerts are FREE and located at Roseland Cottage, aka the "Pink House" 556 Route 169 in Woodstock. Bring a blanket. chairs, and have a picnic out on the lawn. Concerts go from 7-8:30 pm.

Senior Corner

Wii for SeniorsWii Gaming for Woodstock Seniors: The Wii Gaming System is a fun, interactive program that promotes healthy lifestyles through physical active play. Games include tennis, bowling, golf, and dancing. Games are played on a big screen with the use of hand held controllers. The cost is FREE. Please contact the recreation director to schedule your introductory session. All participants must fill out a waiver of liability prior to using the game system. Click here to download the waiver.

Community Kitchen - Every Monday at noon at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock there is a community kitchen event. Local churches take turns each week preparing and serving a free meal for all guests who come. Meals are not served on Holidays, and when Woodstock schools are cancelled.

Tai Chi - Every Tuesday and Thursday there is a free, informal Tai Chi class offered at the East Woodstock Congregational Church from 10-11 am.

New York City Bus Trip: Details on our 2019 New York City Bus trip will be posted soon. The date will be Saturday November 28, 2019.

NOTE: To register for these programs please download the registration form. Contact Crystal Adams at 860-928-6595 ext. 332 for any additional information. Registration and payment for any program can be mailed to WRC, 415 Route 169, Woodstock CT 06281. Alternatively they can be left in the drop box outside of town hall, in the drop box on the wall next to the Recreation office, or handed to the recreation director.
