Land Use Department

The Land Use Department includes the Zoning Enforcement Officer and the Inland Wetlands Agent. The Land Use Administrative Assistant works to receive applications and payments, and provides support to the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency.

The Zoning Enforcement Officer is responsible for enforcing compliance of the rules set forth in the Zoning Regulations approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission. These functions help to ensure and facilitate orderly development, the protection of property values, and the protection of the public health and general welfare of the community. The ZEO reviews and approves all documents related to development of lands within the Town. Anyone constructing, demolishing, adding, or otherwise structurally modifying any building must first obtain appropriate permits from the Zoning Office. The Building Inspector will then review all construction work to make sure it complies with applicable building codes.

With regards to zoning, the Land Use Department provides the following:

  • Assistance and information on applications for zoning permits
  • Investigates complaints of violation of zoning regulations
  • Processes application requests for Variances through Zoning Board of Appeals
  • Reviews all documents related to development of lands within the Town.
